You have probably seen this headline, the US Navy recently submitted and received a patent that is related to UFO technology made the headlines in the news the last couple months. Navy officials claim their radical electromagnetic and superconductor technologies aren’t theoretical, they’re already operable in some form. A list of the US patents are shown below in the references. [1-5] The patent titled “Craft using an inertial mass reduction device” [5] makes claims of a hybrid aerospace-underwater craft being capable of incredible feats of speed and maneuverability and can fly equally well in air, water, or space without leaving a heat signature. This is possible, Pais claims in the patent, because the craft is able to “engineer the fabric of our reality at the most fundamental level” by exploiting the laws of physics. Reading the patent, Pais makes an analogy to the electromagnetic field that is generated to the centrifugal force that one may exert upon an object. For example, a heavy object can be lifted relatively easy when one exerts a centrifugal force upon the object. See this video on YouTube for an example “the Anti-Gravity Wheel” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeyDf4ooPdo). Essentially, the electromagnetic field for this vehicle is rotated around the vehicle in a similar manner as the centrifugal force resulting in a decrease in the inertial mass. The concept that is detailed in the patent is fairly simple, however the engineering required to make it a reality is not. This is also related to the basic quantum chemical understanding of matter how atoms contain discrete energy states on the quantum level. The idea is the researchers theoretically create an incredibly dense and polarized electromagnetic energy field allowing this hybrid craft to create what they call a quantum ‘vacuum’ around itself allowing it to repel any matter, whether air or water molecules with which it interacts. As a result, this new technology allows the craft to ignore aerodynamic or hydrodynamic forces, this is the claim in the patent. In the patent, Pais writes that this craft is then capable of producing high frequency axial spin or accelerated vibration, or high frequency vibrations of electrically charged systems. The way this is accomplished is through the use of a piezoelectric room temperature superconductor capable of storing high amounts of energy and through an electrical pulse technology, allowing the field to move at incredible speeds around the craft creating a polarized electromagnetic field (vacuum) around the craft allowing it to ignore the standard classical physics by removing its inertia and mass from the equation. The publication lists the shape of the vehicle as cone or triangle shaped, which lends fuel to UFO enthusiasts around the world. Patents like room temperature superconductors [4] also lends itself to the feasibility of this technology where the use of this type of material would have great military and commercial value. An additional twist on this is found in the patent law, if the Navy wanted to keep this patent classified, it could have filed the patent under the Invention Secrecy Act of 1951 (35 U.S.C. ch. 17), a law which allows patents to remain classified if they might pose a possible threat to the national security of the United States. Why would this technology be a national security issue? The idea is if enough information was released, and one was able to manufacture this technology creating a craft that could hope into orbit around this planet (Earth), one could also carry a payload and drop anything upon any nation on this planet killing lots of people. This definitely would be a huge national security issue! In order to receive this patent, the Navy had a series of letters that went back and forth to the US patent office which are available to read, and the patent author stated this technology is extremely difficult to build and the patent does not reveal enough details to allow anyone to manufacture this kind of hybrid vehicle.

The technology that is described in these patents have caused SciFi and UFO enthusiasts to go crazy speculating the possibilities while at the same time all of these things are shrouded in mystery and the unknown. These things can be both exciting and scary. The spiritual insights we may draw upon from this type of research are related to those things that are shrouded in mystery and the unknown. There are a lot of concepts that may be related to this from this topic of mystery and the unknown, for example, (i) life after death (the unknown), (ii) angels and demons (the unknown/mystery), and (iii) why certain mitzvot and chukim are given in the Torah (mystery) which have no real practical reasoning behind them? Concerning point (ii) angels and demons, it is possible to find a lot of reading material on this topic. A Google search will produce a large amount of information, speculation, claimed observation (video), experts, and lay-people who all claim to have knowledge of the truth. This is a topic we have to all be very careful with. Another source on angels and demons for example may be found in the Zohar Volume 2, Bereshit B, there is a lot of information that is given on the descriptions of heaven, angels, and demons as it defines them in the heavenly regions, the worlds above according to the Sefirot. In addition, the Zohar lists the 7 regions where departed souls inhabit in heaven, i.e. point (i). So the question is, “Was Yeshua a Kabbalist?” One could argue historically Kabbalah came much later and so the answer is no. Looking at the Apostolic Writings, He did not teach a metaphysical system and neither did he explain the details of heaven as we read according to the Zohar Vol. 2 Bereshit B. He also did not speak of the three higher worlds, though we do read of something similar from Paul’s teachings in 2 Corinthians 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body, I do not know – God knows. (NIV) which may be an allusion to Arich Anpin. Yeshua also did not teach that God’s hidden essence was revealed through the ten sefirot and that human nature was paralleled to the sefirot structure of the universe. On the contrary, Yeshua and his disciples did support what is taught in both the Torah and the Tanach related to spiritual things, which may be considered a mystical approach to heavenly things, such as Zion, “the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” (Hebrews 12:22), of Bread from Heaven alluding to the Messiah of God (Exodus 16:4-21, John 6:22-59), the “separation” of heaven from earth (on the Second Day of creation) and of God originally “placing” Adam in a beautiful orchard (or garden) of fruit trees located in the “east,” in a region called “Eden” (these things are described in the Bible) then using these things as illustrations describing heaven as the garden of eden and hell as a place of torment (Luke 16:19-31).  Note, Yeshua does not go into length to describe how he understood hell, its creation, in the way the Rabbis describe (Zohar) one could make an analogy to Parashat Korach, but fire and torment are not coupled to the people going down to the grave alive as the ground opened and closed around them. Another example may be of the Lord God telling Abraham “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them” (Bereshit / Genesis 15:5) in reference to his future children, and of the gate to heaven, Bet-El (Bethel), of when Jacob awoke from his dream of the sullam (ladder) to heaven in reference to Himself (see Bereshit / Genesis 28, John 1:51) which connected heaven to Earth at a geographical location in Israel. Yeshua also mystically connected this ladder to himself in John 1:51.

What did Yeshua teach?  He upheld the Torah in relation to the fall of man, and he taught Teshuvah (Repentance). Yeshua did not teach that man could ascend to God through mystical means of that the soul has a direct link with God (a kabbalistic concept), manipulate God, of that man could repair the world through a kabbalistic approach. Yeshua was apocalyptic in his eschatology and did not teach the concept of tikkun olam (repair of the world) through self effort. He taught the only way to make peace with God and in this world was through Him as the Savior of the World (מוֹשִׁיעַ הָעוֹלָם) – that salvation, life, and the ultimate healing of the world would come through Him, having faith and receiving God’s Holy Spirit empowering us to overcome both the world and sin in our lives. Yeshua was a mystic in the sense he taught in parables, for example that he was “the Door,” the “Bread of Life,” (from heaven) the “Living Water,” the “Good Shepherd,” and the “Light of the World,” etc. These Descriptions are rooted in the Torah and mystically refer to his intended purpose as the Messiah of God leading his people in righteousness. Yeshua taught that there is a higher truth to the words of the Torah (Matthew 15:15-20 and 16:5-9) saying “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life” (John 6:63). In support of what the Prophet Isaiah predicted, the Messiah would speak many parables which were intended to be mystifying to those who were not sincere in their intention to follow God, Yeshua said “This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand” (Matthew 13:13). Yeshua also said that the “Kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21) and was fully conscious of God at all times when he said, “I am the Father are one” (John 10:30). As we see in the recent patents on UFO technology, limited in our understanding of the spirit realm there is a mystery of the unknown that overshadows each of these things which have a direct influence upon this physical world and upon our lives!

From the sense of Judaism perspective, especially that of Kabbalah, angels are considered of two types, (i) they are ontological entities with distinct personalities and functions (i.e. Michael, Gabriel, etc) with a subset of angelic host that correspond to the ten sefirot (e.g., Metatron – Keter, Raziel, Chokmah, etc.), and (ii) the idea that angels are “messengers” that report back to God the actions of all of creation. As with any extra biblical literature, we realize that these things are an interpretative method and do not always reflect the reality of how angels function.  In the Apostolic Writings, Yeshua dealt with various forms of unclean spirits and demons during His ministry. He cast out many demons, and we are not told whether he had much interaction with angels, though following his 40 days in the wilderness, the Scriptures do say he was attended by angels. (Matthew 4:11, Mark 1:13) The Lord God did not create evil in the sense of doing so allowing a more perfect good. The Lord God is not the author of moral evil, neither does he entice others to sin, but He does use evil for His own purposes (see story of Job). When discussing the topic of evil, sometimes it is difficult to discern the differences between the yetzer hara (evil inclination, the flesh) or an evil spirit. In either case, both the Torah and Yeshua agree that we are to walk the path of righteousness and turn away from evil living our lives according to the Word of God. Studying these things from the perspective of Judaism and the Apostolic Writings, from both traditions, we may glean a lot of information about the unknown and mystery of these things.

Due to the nature of the unknown and mystery, there are many false teachers at work today, including many who teach error concerning the role of scripture in our lives, especially that of the Torah of God. The most important truth found throughout the Scriptures is to trust in God’s Messiah, Yeshua, as Lord and Savior. When Yeshua was asked about doing the “works of God,” Yeshua answered the questioner saying, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” (John 6:29) The author of the Book of Hebrews wrote without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6) since we are literally saved by faith and not by works of righteousness (Romans 8:24, Titus 3:5). The reason this is so is because works of righteousness come as a result of our faith, this is the act of being faithful before God. What God requires in faith is אֱמוּנַת יֵשׁוּעַ. This is the most important concept that is drawn out of the Tanach and the Apostolic Writings. The most important Mitzvah in the Torah is the Ve’ahavta (“Love God with all your heart”, from the Shema, Devarim / Deuteronomy 6:4-10) and the commandment to love others as ourselves (Vayikra / Leviticus 19 and Luke 10:27). These things presuppose (i) that we have faith that God exists, and (ii) that we are empowered by His Spirit to obey His commandments in truth (to overcome the world and sin in our lives). This teaches us that outside of our faith in Yeshua and the indwelling of God’s Spirit in our lives, these things are impossible. This is because the “law of sin and death” (Romans 6-7) are at work. Faith is what opens the way to heaven, it is what enables our prayers to be heard, and allows us to enter into the presence of God who sits upon the Throne in heaven. Faith and indwelling (God’s Spirit) are what it means to “live in the Presence of the LORD” and being set free from the way of this world. We are then given this newness of life to walk in faith and Zeal for God’s Word in our lives as it says “The righteous shall live by faith” (צַדִּיק בֶּאֱמוּנָתוֹ יִחְיֶה). Though there is a mystery and the spiritual realm involves the unknown, we can have faith and trust in the promises of God as the writer of the book of Hebrews says, “For yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith (צַדִּיק בֶּאֱמוּנָתוֹ יִחְיֶה), but if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him. But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls” (Hebrews 10:37-40) Salvation, and the way this works, as we read here in Hebrews 10, is truly a great mystery of human life. Essentially the path from which we were traveling (in sin) we are transformed to follow God’s ways being conformed to the image of the Messiah, this process of God working in our lives is part of the great unknown. We know the commandments in the Torah, we know Yeshua upheld the command of God and taught others to do so too, and we also know our weakness both in keeping the commands faithfully, as well as our weakness before temptations of almost any form. Under this context, indeed, great is the mystery of godliness, as Paul wrote to Timothy in 1 Timothy 3:16. What we learn from all of these things, is the importance for us to understand is the salvation of God is not an extrinsic reward as in getting a free ticket out of hell, or a ticket to heaven. The reward we receive from God is this inner transformation in which we are united with God through faith in His Messiah and the working of the mercy of God in our lives that changes us into the fullness of what we are created to be. This transformation is the most important aspect of who we are in the Messiah (Christ) and this transformation conforms to what is written in the Word of God, for the glory of His Name!
