Matthew 5:1
The concept of “Let Light Shine,” as seen in Matthew 5:14-16 and Luke 12:35, has significant thematic parallels in the Torah, where light often symbolizes guidance, righteousness, and the presence of God. The Torah associates light with the covenantal relationship between God and His people. In Exodus 13:21, the pillar of fire provided light to guide Israel by night during their journey in the wilderness, symbolizing God’s constant presence and protection. This parallels the idea of believers being a “light” to the world, reflecting God’s guidance and direction. We note in Exodus 27:20-21, the command to keep the lamp burning in the Tabernacle emphasizes the importance of maintaining a continual source of light before the Lord. This parallels the spiritual readiness and vigilance mentioned in Luke 12:35, where Yeshua instructs His followers to keep their lamps burning as they await the Lord’s return. Deuteronomy 4:5-8 also connects light with obedience and witness. Moshe reminds Israel that their obedience to God’s statutes would set them apart and make them a light to other nations, demonstrating God’s wisdom and righteousness. This aligns with the NT exhortation to let one’s light shine so that others may see good deeds and glorify God. These examples from the Torah establish a rich foundation for the concept of letting light shine as found in the NT text. Note again this is how the NT teaches Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
