In Luke 22:36, Yeshua tells his disciples to sell their garments and buy a sword, which is often interpreted in different ways. All of which may reference being both spiritually and physically ready for coming dangers. There are passages in the Torah that emphasize preparedness, defense, and the necessity of taking action in times of hardship. For example, Exodus 22:2-3 discusses self-defense, stating that if a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck fatally, there is no guilt for the one defending their home. This reflects the idea of protecting oneself when facing imminent danger. Genesis 14:14-16 speaks of Abraham mobilizing 318 trained men of his household to rescue his nephew Lot, showing that even a patriarch had to take up arms when necessary to defend his family and people. Deuteronomy 20:1-4 also discusses warfare laws, encouraging Israel being prepared for battle while also relying on God’s strength. Though the emphasis is on faith, it acknowledges the practical need for weapons and strategy. We note that while the Torah primarily focuses on trusting in God, we should also recognize the need for preparation, whether physical, military, or spiritual, is necessary in certain moments. Yeshua’s statement in Luke may be echoing this theme of readiness. This is how the NT text teaches Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
