The Torah strongly emphasizes the importance of law, justice, and respecting authority, which aligns with the principle found in Romans 13:1, where Paul urges people to obey civil laws and governing authorities. In Deuteronomy 16:18-20, Moses instructs Israel to appoint judges and officers in their communities to uphold justice, teaching that a well-ordered society depends on the fair application of the law. Similarly, Exodus 18:13-26 describes how Moses, at the advice of Jethro, established a system of leadership where capable men were appointed to govern smaller groups, reinforcing the necessity of societal structure and lawful order. The Torah also commands obedience to laws beyond religious ones, as seen in Jeremiah 29:7, where Israel is told to seek the welfare of the city in which they live, implying that they should respect and contribute to the governance of their surroundings. Furthermore, Leviticus 19:34 instructs us to treat strangers with fairness, reinforcing the ethical aspect of respecting civic rules and governance. While the Torah places God’s commands above all, it does not dismiss the importance of civil authority, encouraging justice, responsibility, and adherence to legal systems that uphold righteousness. Note this is how Paul and the NT are teaching Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
