וְעַתָּה הָסִירוּ מֵעֲלֵיכֶם כָּל רֶשַׁע וְכָל מִרְמָה, אֶת הַצְּבִיעוּת וְהַקִּנְאָה וְכָל לָשׁוֹן הָרָע,
The concept of “laying aside all malice,” as found in 1 Peter 2:1, has several parallels in the Torah, where the removal of malice and related destructive attitudes is tied to living in obedience to God and fostering harmony within the community. For example, in Leviticus 19:17–18, “You shall not hate your brother in your heart… You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.” This passage specifically addresses the internal attitudes of hatred and malice that can disrupt relationships, encouraging instead the cultivation of love and forgiveness. Peter’s exhortation to rid oneself of malice resonates with this call to reject vengeful and harmful inclinations. Exodus 23:4–5, instructs us to return our enemy’s lost ox or donkey and to help when our enemy’s animal is struggling. These acts go beyond refraining from malicious intent; they actively promote reconciliation and goodwill, contrasting starkly with harboring malice or seeking harm. In Deuteronomy 15:7–8, the Torah teaches generosity and compassion, commanding that no one harden their heart or shut their hand against a poor brother. In addition, Exodus 20:16 prohibits bearing false witness, a command that touches on the rejection of harmful and malicious speech. These Torah principles demonstrate that laying aside malice is not merely a moral suggestion but a fundamental part of living in covenant with God. This again is how the NT teaches Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
