1 Peter 2:1

The concept of “laying aside all guile,” as found in 1 Peter 2:1, also has parallels in the Torah, where honesty, sincerity, and integrity are consistently emphasized as vital qualities for maintaining a covenantal relationship with God and fostering harmonious communities. For example, in Exodus 20:16, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” This commandment addresses dishonesty and deceit, not only in legal matters but also more broadly in interpersonal relationships. It reflects God’s desire for His people to reject any form of guile (deceptive behavior) and embrace truthfulness as a foundational ethical principle. Leviticus 19:11, commands, “You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another.” This verse underscores the rejection of all forms of deceit and trickery, aligning closely with the call in 1 Peter to put aside guile. Deuteronomy 25:13–16 teaches against using dishonest weights and measures, explicitly linking deceit in business practices to an abomination before the Lord. This passage highlights the broader principle of rejecting guile in all areas of life, reinforcing the idea that integrity is central to a life of obedience and faithfulness. These Torah teachings reveal that laying aside guile involves more than avoiding outright lies, it requires cultivating honesty, integrity, and transparency in all aspects of life. Again, this is how the NT teaches Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
