1 Peter 2:1

The concept in 1 Peter 2:1, which calls believers to “lay aside all evil speech,” has strong thematic parallels in the Torah, particularly regarding instructions about speech and conduct. For example, the Prohibition Against Slander (Lashon Hara) in Leviticus 19:16 warns against harmful speech that can damage relationships and communities. This aligns with the idea of laying aside “evil speech.” In addition, Honoring Others in Leviticus 19:18, the Torah commands, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This principle implies that speaking maliciously or negatively about others is contrary to the love and respect God expects from His people. Exodus 20:16 speaks to Guarding Speech as part of the Ten Commandments, the instruction “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” underscores the importance of truthfulness and the avoidance of harmful or deceitful words. Also, Murmuring and Complaining in Numbers 14:1-4, we are told about murmuring against God and Moses, a behavior repeatedly criticized throughout the Torah narrative. Complaints and rebellious speech are portrayed as barriers to a faithful relationship with God, echoing the NT directive to lay aside behaviors and speech rooted in negativity. These Torah principles align closely with the exhortation in 1 Peter 2:1. This is how the NT teaches Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
