1 Peter 2:17
The concept of honoring all men, as seen in 1 Peter 2:17 (Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.), finds parallels in the Torah, particularly in the principles of respecting the dignity and worth of every individual as creations of God. In Genesis 1:27, the Torah establishes the foundational idea that all humanity is made in the image of God (בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים). This intrinsic value attributed to every person serves as the basis for honoring and respecting all individuals, regardless of their status. In addition, the commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself” (וְאָהַבְתָּ לְרֵעֲךָ כָּמוֹךָ) found in Leviticus 19:18 expands the principle of honor and respect to all people within the community. While this initially applies to fellow Israelites, later verses in the same chapter extend this respect to the stranger (גֵּר, Leviticus 19:34). This recognition of shared humanity and empathy calls for kindness and honor toward all people, including those outside the immediate community. Deuteronomy 10:19 reinforces this idea by commanding to love strangers. These parallels demonstrate that the Torah’s ethical teachings lay a foundation for the principles of honor and respect echoed in 1 Peter. The call to honor all men aligns with the Torah’s insistence on recognizing the inherent value of each person as part of God’s creation. Note again, this is how the NT teaches Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
