Hebrews 3:6, 3:14
The concept of “holding confidence” or maintaining steadfast faith, as mentioned in Hebrews 3:6 and 3:14, has several parallels in the Torah, particularly in the Torah narratives of Israel’s journey and the leadership of figures like Moses and Abraham. Abraham is a prototypical model of unwavering faith. In Genesis 15:6, it is written, “Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.” Abraham’s belief and trust in God’s promises, despite not immediately seeing their fulfillment, reflect the essence of holding confidence. According to Exodus 14:13, Israel faced the seemingly insurmountable challenge of the Red Sea with the Egyptian army pursuing them. Moses tells the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.” This moment emphasizes the need to hold confidence in God’s deliverance, even when circumstances appear dire. The story of the twelve spies in Numbers 13-14 also highlights this theme. While ten of the spies brought back a discouraging report, Joshua and Caleb held firm in their confidence in God’s promise to give them the land. Numbers 14:8-9 captures Caleb’s steadfast faith: “If the Lord is pleased with us, He will lead us into that land… Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land.” These examples from the Torah illustrate the importance of faith and trust in God, paralleling the exhortation in Hebrews to hold confidence. We note again, this is how the NT teaches Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
