1 Peter 4:8
The Torah contains several passages that highlight the concept of fervent love, which aligns with the teaching in 1 Peter 4:8, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” For example, in Leviticus 19:18 we are given an ethical standard, “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.” This command emphasizes the importance of loving others deeply and selflessly. Deuteronomy 6:5 is part of the Shema, and is a central declaration of faith in Judaism: “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” The call to love God with everything we have reflects a fervent, wholehearted love. Exodus 23:4-5 highlights compassion and love even towards one’s enemies, “If you come across your enemy’s ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to return it. If you see the donkey of someone who hates you fallen down under its load, do not leave it there; be sure you help them with it.” This demonstrates love in action, even in difficult circumstances. These examples from the Torah underscore the principle of fervent love for God and for others, which is a consistent theme throughout the scriptures. This kind of love is selfless, compassionate, and enduring, and is consistent with the NT teaching on the topic. This is how Peter taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
