1 Timothy 6:11

The Torah contains several passages that parallel the concept of following meekness, as highlighted in 1 Timothy 6:11. Meekness is characterized by humility and gentleness. This is a highly valued virtue regarded in the Torah and all of Scripture. Moses is often highlighted as the archetype of meekness in the Torah. Despite his significant role as the leader of Israel, he is described as exceedingly humble. Numbers 12:3 “Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.” This verse explicitly describes Moses as the meekest person on earth, illustrating his humility and gentleness in his leadership. Another example is found in Genesis 18:27 “And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes.” Here Abraham makes intercession for Sodom and Gomorrah demonstrating his humility before God. He acknowledges his own lowliness while pleading for the cities. Abraham’s approach highlights a respectful and humble attitude in his relationship with God. Note also Deuteronomy 8:2-3, where the Torah commands humility among the people. Another example is God’s instructions to the Israel about not becoming proud and forgetting Him when they prosper in the Promised Land. This passage underscores the importance of humility and dependence on God, reminding the Israelites of their reliance on His provision. These examples, among others from the Torah, illustrate the importance of meekness, humility, and gentleness in one’s relationship with God and others. They align closely with the NT call to follow meekness, highlighting the continuity of this virtue throughout the biblical narrative. Note this is how Paul taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away.
