1 Timothy 6:9–11
6:9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 6:11 But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. 1 Timothy 6:9-11

The Torah contains several teachings that parallel the concept of fleeing from hurtful lusts as mentioned in 1 Timothy 6:9-11. For example, in Genesis 39:7-12 we read the story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife. Joseph’s resistance to temptation and his decision to flee from her advances exemplify the principle of avoiding harmful desires and maintaining integrity. Joseph’s actions are in line with the idea of fleeing from hurtful lusts. In Exodus 20:17 the Tenth Commandment: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor” addresses the avoidance of covetousness and harmful desires, reinforcing the need to flee one’s lustful inclinations. According to Leviticus 19:2, this verse emphasizes the call to holiness, which includes refraining from sinful desires and actions. The pursuit of holiness entails fleeing from behaviors and thoughts that are contrary to God’s will. Deuteronomy 6:5 states, “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” This command highlights the importance of directing one’s affections and desires towards God, which inherently involves turning away from harmful lusts and distractions. These Torah teachings align with Paul’s NT exhortation to flee from hurtful lusts, emphasizing the importance of self-control, holiness, and directing one’s desires towards righteous living. This is how Paul taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
