1 Corinthians 6:18

The concept of “Flee from fornication” in 1 Corinthians 6:18 stresses the importance of avoiding sexual immorality for the sake of spiritual and physical well-being. This idea is echoed in various ways in the Torah, where guidelines about sexual conduct are given to maintain the holiness and purity of the community. For example, Leviticus 18 outlines various sexual prohibitions to keep the community pure and holy. Leviticus 18:6-7 says, “None of you shall approach any blood relative of his to uncover nakedness; I am the Lord. You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, that is, the nakedness of your mother. She is your mother; you are not to uncover her nakedness.” Deuteronomy 22:22 addresses the consequences of sexual immorality by stating, “If a man is found lying with a married woman, then both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman; thus you shall purge the evil from Israel.” This passage emphasizes the seriousness of maintaining sexual morality within the community. In Genesis 39, Joseph exemplifies the principle of fleeing from sexual immorality when he resists Potiphar’s wife’s advances and literally runs away to avoid sinning against God. His actions demonstrate the importance of avoiding situations that could lead to immoral behavior. Leviticus 19:2, “Speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.'” This call to holiness includes maintaining moral and sexual purity as part of living a life that reflects God’s holiness. Note also how the Torah often likens unfaithfulness to God to the act of adultery, highlighting the spiritual significance of sexual purity. For instance, in Hosea 1-3, Israel’s unfaithfulness to God is compared to an adulterous relationship, emphasizing the need for fidelity in both spiritual and physical relationships. These passages from the Torah reinforce the importance of maintaining sexual purity and fleeing from immorality. They provide a foundation for the NT’s exhortation to “flee from fornication,” underscoring the continuity of this moral principle throughout the Scriptures. Note this is how Paul taught Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
