1 Timothy 1:4
1 Timothy 1:4
1:4 nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith. (NASB)
While the Torah contains many genealogies, the importance of these are related to the promises of God! What Paul is writing about in 1 Timothy 1:4 is about boasting in one’s genealogy where our emphasis should be on the importance of focusing on God’s commandments, teachings, and righteous behavior over other concerns. For example, in Deuteronomy 29:29 the emphasis is on the revealed commandments and teachings of God, rather than on secret or speculative matters. Deuteronomy 10:12-13 speaks to the importance of obedience to God’s commandments and genuine devotion, rather than becoming preoccupied with other matters. Note again the emphasis in Leviticus 18:4-5 on adhering to God’s laws and living by them, which aligns with the principle of focusing on God’s teachings. While the Torah includes genealogies, such as in Genesis 5 and Genesis 10, the primary purpose of these genealogies is to establish the lineage and fulfill specific divine promises rather than to be a focus of speculative or distracting inquiry. The emphasis in the Torah is on living according to God’s commandments, maintaining faithfulness, and cultivating a righteous life. This is how Paul taught Torah; the Torah has not passed away!
