2 Timothy 4:5
2 Timothy 4:5
4:5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. (NASB)
Abraham is a prime example of living out and spreading God’s message, which parallels the concept of doing the work of an evangelist like we read in 2 Timothy 4:5. In Genesis 12:1-3, the Lord God calls Abraham to leave his homeland and promises to make him a great nation through which all families of the earth would be blessed. This shows Abraham’s role in spreading God’s blessing and message to the world. Genesis 18:19 states “For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just.” This verse highlights Abraham’s role in teaching his household and future generations, much like an evangelist spreading God’s ways. In Genesis 12:5 the phrase “the people they had acquired” suggests that Abraham and his family brought along people who joined their household and likely followed their faith and practices where Abraham acted as an evangelist. We also read the NT interpretation in Hebrews 11:8-10 and Romans 4:20-22 of Abraham’s unwavering faith. Abraham’s life embodies the principles of faith, obedience, and teaching others about God, which are core aspects of evangelism. The Torah has not passed away!
