Bits of Torah Truths – Torah Concept in the NT: Do Not Pray like the Heathen – Episode 297
Matthew 6:8
Matthew 6:8
6:8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. (NASB)
The concept of not being like the heathen in prayer, as mentioned in Matthew 6:8, can indeed be found in the Torah. For Example, the Torah contains several passages that warn against learning the ways of the nations or imitating their practices. Leviticus 18:3, states, “According to the doings of the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the doings of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you, you shall not do; nor shall you walk in their ordinances.” This verse explicitly instructs us not to adopt the customs and practices of the nations around us. Deuteronomy 12:30-31, states, “Take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed from before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’ You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way; for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods.” This passage warns against learning and imitating the practices of other nations, particularly in the context of worship and prayer. Note how Matthe was teaching Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
