Matthew 6:1
Matthew 6:1
6:1 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven. (NASB)
The Torah emphasizes the importance of giving and righteous actions with the right intentions, not for public recognition similar to what Yeshua is teaching in Matthew 6:1. In Deuteronomy 15:7-8 “If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. Rather, be open handed and freely lend them whatever they need.” This passage encourages giving to the needy with a genuine heart, without seeking public approval or reward. Leviticus 19:18 states, “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” This verse underscores the principle of acting out of love and genuine care for others, rather than for show. Notice how these principles align closely with Matthew 6:1, where Jesus advises against performing acts of righteousness for the sake of being seen by others, but instead to do so with a sincere heart.
