1 Corinthians 10:7
1 Corinthians 10:7
10:7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. (KJV)
Paul teaches from the Torah commanding us not to be involved in idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:7) There are many passages in the Torah that warn against idolatry, which aligns with Paul’s admonition in 1 Corinthians 10:7. One of the most explicit prohibitions against idolatry in the Torah is found in the Ten Commandments. In Exodus 20:3-5, it is written, “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God.” Another strong warning against idolatry is found in Deuteronomy 4:15-19, where the Israelites are warned not to make idols in the form of any creature or celestial body. These passages from the Torah underscore the importance of monotheism and the prohibition of idolatry, which is a central tenet of the Scriptures. The Torah aligns with Paul’s warning in 1 Corinthians 10:7, emphasizing the danger of idolatry and the importance of worshiping God alone. The Torah has not passed away!
