Matthew 6:5

Matthew 6:5
6:5 “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. (NASB)

The concept of not being like the hypocrites in prayer, as mentioned in Matthew 6:5, is indeed present in the Torah. In the Torah, the concept of hypocrisy is not explicitly defined, but the underlying idea is certainly there. The Torah emphasizes the importance of sincerity and authenticity in one’s relationship with God. Deuteronomy 10:12, states, “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” This verse highlights the need for genuine devotion and sincerity in one’s relationship with God. Another example can be found in Leviticus 19:2, which says, “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.'” This verse emphasizes the importance of personal holiness and authenticity in one’s relationship with God. Matthew is teaching in Matthew 6:5 a Torah concept, the Torah has not passed away!
