Ephesians 4:32
Ephesians 4:32
4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. (KJV)
Here Paul commands us to be tenderhearted in Ephesians 4:32. In the Torah, the concept of being tender-hearted and forgiving is indeed present. One parallel can be found in Leviticus 19:18, which instructs, “You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.” This verse emphasizes the importance of love and forgiveness as central to the relationship with others. Another example is in Exodus 34:6-7, where the LORD describes Himself as “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” This passage reflects the attributes of God that we are encouraged to emulate. These teachings in the Torah lay the foundation for the principles that Paul later articulates in the NT text, calling for kindness, tender-heartedness, and forgiveness among believers. The continuity between the Hebrew Bible and the NT on these moral and ethical teachings is a testament to these enduring Torah centric values, indicating the Torah has not passed away!
