5:14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. (KJV)
2 Timothy 2:24
2 Timothy 2:24
2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, (KJV)
Here in the NT text we are being commanded to be patient toward all men (1 Thessalonians 5:14, 2 Timothy 2:24). The concept of patience and treating others with kindness and understanding is deeply rooted in Jewish tradition, including the Torah. The Hebrew term often associated with patience is “erech apayim” (אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם ) which translates to “long-suffering” or “slow to anger.” God’s character is described as being “slow to anger” (Exodus 34:6, Numbers 14:18). The Torah encourages humans to emulate this quality by being patient and compassionate toward others. There are many other ways the Torah emphasizes being patient with others, here God is our example. The Torah has not passed away!
