James 4:9

James 4:9
4:9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. (KJV)

There are Torah parallels to being afflicted and mourning (James 4:9). For instance, in Deuteronomy 8:3, it is written: “He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” In addition, the Jewish tradition emphasizes the importance of mourning and comforting those who mourn. Rabbinic tradition also acknowledges the value of suffering. Rabbi Simeon ben Yohai, a second-century teacher, remarked that three precious gifts were given by God to Israel and they were only given through sufferings: the Torah, the land of Israel, and the World to Come. Note, this is how James was teaching Torah, the Torah has not passed away!
