1 Peter 5:8

1 Peter 5:8
5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (NASB)

The concept of being sober found in 1 Peter 5:8 can be interpreted as being vigilant, clear-minded, and self-controlled, and these concepts are present in the Tanakh. For example, Job 38:3 uses a similar expression when God tells Job to “gird up your loins like a man.” This conveys a call to face challenges courageously. The Torah teaches the importance of sobriety in Leviticus 10:1-2, reading all of Leviticus 10 we learn how Nadav and Avihu, Aaron’s sons, were drinking alcohol and then went before the Lord and they died as a result. These examples illustrate that the Torah, like 1 Peter 5:8, emphasizes the importance of being sober in the sense of being vigilant, clear-minded, and self-controlled. The Torah has not passed away!
