2 Timothy 4:2
2 Timothy 4:2
4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (KJV)
This concept that Paul presents in 2 Timothy 4:2 to be “Instant in season, out of season” conveys the idea of being prepared and persistent, ready to act or speak out, regardless of the circumstances being favorable or not. Here, Paul is emphasizing the Torah concept of constant readiness and unwavering commitment to God’s commandments can be seen throughout the Five Books of Moses. For example, in Deuteronomy 6:7, the Israelites are instructed to teach God’s commandments diligently to their children and to discuss them constantly, whether at home or on the road, when lying down or getting up, symbolizing a readiness to engage with the divine word at all times. This can be seen as a parallel to being “instant” in all seasons, as it emphasizes the importance of being ever-present and engaged with spiritual duties. Note also how the Passover in Exodus 12 required the Israelites to be ready to leave Egypt at a moment’s notice, which can be seen as a form of being “instant” in fulfilling God’s will. Again, this is how Paul taught Torah! The Torah has not passed away!
