James 5:7-8
James 5:7–8
5:7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. 5:8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. (KJV)
The concept to be patient until the Messiah comes (James 5:7-8) finds parallels in both the Torah and Jewish Tradition. In Jewish tradition, the coming of the Messiah is a future event that will mark the ultimate redemption of the Jewish people. The concept of waiting for the Messiah is deeply ingrained in Jewish prayer and liturgy. For instance, in the daily Amidah prayer, there is a prayer for the ingathering of the exiles. Isaiah (Isaiah 30:18) says: “Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you, And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the LORD is a God of justice; How blessed are all those who long for Him.” This verse reflects the idea of waiting patiently for God’s salvation. We see James 5:7-8 expressing the same Jewish sentiment to wait patiently for the Messiah. The Torah has not passed away!
