Romans 12:12
יב גִּילוּ בַּתִּקְוָה. הֱיוּ סַבְלָנִים בְּצָרָה. הַתְמִידוּ בִּתְפִלָּה.
Romans 12:12
12:12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, (NASB)
Paul teaches us to be Patient in tribulation in Romans 12:12. The Torah in fact does contain teachings about patience during times of tribulation or persecution. For example, the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis is a prime example of patience during tribulation. Joseph spends over 20 years in Egypt, including time in prison for a crime he did not commit, before reencountering his brothers. Despite these hardships, Joseph remains patient and ultimately rises to a position of power. In Jewish thought patience is greatly esteemed. For example, Proverbs 15:18 states, “A hot-tempered man provokes a quarrel; a patient man calms strife.” Ecclesiastes 7:8-9 also extols the virtue of patience, saying, “The end of a matter is better than the beginning of it; better a patient spirit than a haughty spirit. Don’t let your spirit be quickly vexed, for vexation abides in the breast of fools.” Patience is also essential for trusting in God and letting things take their course, this is one of the core teachings of the Torah. As we can see this is how Paul teaches Torah! The Torah has not passed away!
