Romans 12:13
12:13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. (KJV)
Paul teaches us Torah telling us to be given to hospitality according to Romans 12:13. The Torah speaks about the value of hospitality in several instances, and one of the most notable examples is that of Abraham. In Genesis 18, Abraham is depicted as the model for hospitality. He opens his home to three strangers, offering them food, drink, and a place to rest. Abraham is proactive and eager to welcome these wayfarers into his home. This act of hospitality is seen as an important value in Jewish tradition, known as (כנסת אורחים hachnasat orkhim). Abraham’s hospitality is characterized by his attentiveness to his guests’ needs, both physical and emotional. He not only provides for their material needs but also takes a personal interest in them, ensuring that they do not feel like they have imposed on him. His eagerness and care with which he sees off his guests contribute to his reputation as a paragon of hospitality. This story underscores the importance of hospitality in Jewish tradition and serves as a model for us to follow. Paul teaches us Torah in this way encouraging us to be welcoming and attentive to the needs of others, reflecting the values of kindness and generosity that is found in the Torah! The Torah has not passed away!
