2 Timothy 2:24
2 Timothy 2:24
2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, (KJV)
Here, Paul’s command us to be gentle to all men (2 Timothy 2:24) may be found in the Torah principles of compassion, kindness, and respect for others which are deeply rooted in the teachings of the Torah. For example, the Torah instructs us to love our neighbor as ourselves (Leviticus 19:18), which implies a gentleness and respect for the dignity of others. The Torah also emphasizes the importance of treating strangers with kindness, as in Exodus 22:21 and Leviticus 19:33-34, where the Israelites are reminded that they were strangers in Egypt and therefore must not oppress the strangers among them. This can be seen as an extension of gentleness to all, including those outside one’s immediate community. The concept of “gentleness” can also be related to the idea of “chesed,” (grace) often translated as loving-kindness, which is a fundamental ethical principle in Jewish thought and is exemplified by figures such as Abraham, who showed hospitality to strangers (Genesis 18). This is how Paul taught Torah; the Torah has not passed away!
