Titus 3:9
Titus 3:9
3:9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. (NASB)
When Paul refers to “genealogies” in Titus 3:9, he is likely cautioning against engaging in debates over ancestral lineages that were causing divisions within the early believers. These genealogies may have been used to assert status or authority based on descent, which involved pride over a brother or sister. In the Torah, while there is a significant emphasis on genealogies, particularly in the book of Genesis, which traces the lineage of the people of Israel, there also isn’t a direct parallel to the concept of disputing over genealogies as mentioned by Paul. However, the Torah does stress the importance of unity and not causing strife within the community. For instance, Leviticus 19:18, which calls for loving one’s neighbor as oneself, can be seen as a foundational principle that would discourage the kind of divisive behavior Paul warns against. The Torah has not passed away.
