1 John 5:3
ג הֵן זֹאת הִיא אַהֲבַת אֱלֹהִים, שֶׁנִּשְׁמֹר אֶת מִצְווֹתָיו. וּמִצְווֹתָיו אֵינָן קָשׁוֹת,
1 John 5:3
5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (KJV)
John writes in his epistle, in 1 John 5:3, that it is the love of God to keep His commandments. What John is talking about is that obedience is an expression of love. This verse begins by defining love for God in terms of obedience. Just as a child obeys their parents to demonstrate love, believers express their love for God by keeping His commandments. When we genuinely love someone, we naturally desire to please them and follow their instructions. Similarly, our love for God is evidenced by our willingness to obey Him. This verse also states that the commands are not burdensome. The verse emphasizes that God’s commandments are not burdensome. Unlike oppressive rules or harsh demands, God’s instructions are reasonable and attainable. When our hearts are right, obedience to God becomes a joyful response to faith, one of faithfulness. His commands are not grievous; they lead to a long life. The Torah has not passed away!
