1 Peter 5:5
1 Peter 5:5
5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. (KJV)
Proverbs 3:34
34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: But he giveth grace unto the lowly. (KJV)
The Torah emphasizes humility as an essential trait. While it doesn’t explicitly command humility in the same way as 1 Peter 5:5 does, it provides principles and examples that highlight its importance. For example, writing a Torah scroll is one of the 613 commandments in the Torah that one is to write for themselves a copy of God’s Torah. This act ensures that the Torah is taught to future generations and is to be considered as if it was received at Sinai. It reflects humility to engage in this sacred task of copying and transmitting God’s word. This illustrates how God values humility and opposes pride. Peter draws attention to God’s attitude toward humility and states this is for both the old and young. Again a Torah principle taught in the NT text!
