1 Timothy 6:20
1 Timothy 6:20
6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: (KJV)
Paul writes to Timothy about Profane and vain babbling. (1 Timothy 6:20) It is interesting that this is also a Torah based concept. The Torah emphasizes the importance of speech and cautions against idle or harmful talk. For example, Leviticus 19:16 warns against going about as a slanderer (lashon hara) among the people, and Exodus 23:1 advises not to spread false reports. These can be seen as directives against engaging in profane or vain talk. While the specific phrase “profane and vain babblings” is more commonly associated with NT writings, such as 2 Timothy 2:16, which advises to avoid such talk as it leads to more ungodliness, the underlying principle of using speech for good and not harm is present in the Torah. The Torah’s teachings encourage the use of speech to build up rather than tear down, to bring peace rather than strife, and to reflect the values of the community rather than personal or selfish ends. The Torah has not passed away!
